Dance Act - Frequently asked questions

We appreciate that you may have some questions before joining the Dance School. We hope you find the information below informative and useful.

However, if you still have questions we have not answered here, please do contact us.

  • What is Musical Theatre?

Musical Theatre is the perfect all round class consisting of a 'little of everything' including dance, drama and song, for children aged 6 years and above. Students may work on drama sketches and scripted work, songs and medleys, as well as excerpts from bigger staged musical numbers such as: Annie, Bugsy Malone, Mary Poppins, the

Sound of Music, the Wizard of Oz, Wicked, We Will Rock You, Hairspray, Grease, Legally Blonde, Little Shop of Horrors & Billy Elliot to name just a few.

An excellent class for encouraging interaction with peers, social skills and confidence, not forgetting those all important performance skills.

  • What is Disney Pop?

Disney Pop is a brilliant, fun and energetic dance class for those budding little performers aged between 3 – 6 years of age. It is the perfect start for those who may want to continue onto Musical Theatre or Street Dance once they reach the appropriate age. The children do a 'warm up' and practice fun 'corner work' which includes kicks, jumps and turns.

They are then taught a routine to one of their favorite songs. The music used will be a mixture from the Disney films, Pop music and also a touch of Musical Theatre.

The children are taught the basic techniques of dance within the class, whilst having great fun and often encouraging them to 'sing a long' to the dance they are performing, helping to build their confidence.

  • What happens on our first visit?

On arrival please sign in your son/daughter with one of our ladies at the desk. She will give you a registration form to complete & then direct you to the appropriate studio for the taster session of your child's choice.

  • What should my child wear?

We pride ourselves in ensuring that our pupils are correctly dressed for each and every class and a uniform list is available upon request. Once you have signed up for the term you can purchase all dance uniform and appropriate footwear via the Dance School.

Hair must always be tied back & in a bun for ballet.

  • Which grade/class will be appropriate for my child?

Please email us to advise your child's age and if they have danced previously. We can gauge the appropriate class for them to try. After the taster session, we may advise changing to another grade/class.

  • Can I watch my child's class?

We do not allow parents to watch classes as this can be very disruptive and hamper progression within class. We have child friendly waiting areas for parents at all of our venues.

  • Will my child participate in examinations and shows?

Every two years, we hold our variety show (usually at the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks) and all students are invited to perform in this fantastic event.

There is also an opportunity for selected students to perform at a prestigious venue (Royal Albert Hall and Sadler's Well's Theatre, for example) once a year.

We enter pupils for the I.S.T.D examinations in Tap (5 years+), Ballet (6 years+) and Modern (5 years+), when we feel the child is fully prepared and able to take the examination successfully. Shows and examinations are not compulsory and there will be additional costs associated with both.

  • How does my child become a member of the Performance Team?

Every year we select approximately 35 pupils who commit to a whole year of rehearsals and performances around the country and sometimes even abroad.

Each child needs to attend a Ballet class and at least one other genre and must show determination, commitment and dedication before being considered for the team. More details around the Performance Team's commitments will be provided at the time.
